Shape
Whilst a shape is any flat, two-dimensional area defined by a boundary, they exist in many forms.
Write down some descriptive words for shape.
Regular or geometric shapes can be described by mathematical terms such as polygons and include the well-known plane shapes squares, triangles, rectangles and circles. What type of mood do these shapes express?
Irregular shapes are organic shapes which have outlines which may be curved, angular, or a combination of both (Bowie-Russell, 2010).
What is the difference between curved shapes and angular shapes?
Shapes can be used to create balance, contrast and pattern, through combining them in different ways.
When shapes are repeated in an ordered fashion it creates a pattern.
Contrast is created when two different shapes are placed together, such as an irregular shape and a geometric shape. This may be used to create emphasis or conflict within an artwork.
Balance is created when similar shapes are used throughout a painting in a symmetrical or asymmetrical way.
Have a Go
Choose one geometric shape. Quickly fill your page with as many shapes as you like in whatever combination. Think about how you have balanced your design.
Using watercolours, paint your design. You may want to use your knowledge of tints and shades to change the mood of your design.
How do colour and shape work together to express a particular feeling in your design?
Compare your design with someone who has used a different shape and colour. Use the following venn diagram to explore the similarities and differences in your designs.
